Read More » The Bangkok Post reported the plans on Saturday, quoting government spokesman, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana. He said the areas to be opened were Bangkok, Chiang Mai (Muang, Mae Rim, Mae Taeng and Doi Tao districts), Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin district), Phetchaburi (Cha-am district) and Chon Buri (Pattaya, Bang Lamung and Sattahip districts). COVID cases nationwide had fallen to slightly more than 10,000 a day in recent weeks and this level was seen as manageable for the healthcare system, the newspaper reported. Thanakorn said the government’s decision followed the success of the Phuket Sandbox scheme, which had injected 2.33 billion baht into the economy since its launch in July. “Under the Phuket sandbox, there have been no reports of transmissions between foreign visitors and Thais,’’ he told The Post. “Thais should therefore be confident and join us in transforming Thai tourism,” However, the newspaper cautioned the reaction to the reopening date by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration was unclear.
