Licensing approval brings Inmarsat’s broadband inflight WiFi to India

State-owned communications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has received the licenses to deliver Inmarsat’s Global Express (GX) mobile broadband services to India. Read More » The decision by the Department of Telecommunications means Indian airlines will be able to deploy GX for inflight connectivity. The Ka-band service advertises itself as the first and only high-speed broadband network designed for mobility and government customers to seamlessly span the world. Its capacity is growing with Inmarsat planning to launch another seven GX satellites in the next three years. One Indian carrier to benefit from the decision is SpiceJet. “We are looking forward to offering this ground-breaking connectivity service to our passengers later this year when we introduce our new 737 MAX aircraft,’’ said SpiceJet managing director, Ajay Singh. “It will enable our customers to remain connected in the air as they are on the ground.”
