First AirAsia profit gain in five quarters

AirAsia posted a marginal increase in its 2012 first quarter after-tax net profit to 172.4 million ringgit (US$55 million) from 171.9 million ringgit a year ago, the first profit gain in five quarters. Read More »
Revenue rose 10.9% to 1.17 billion ringgit compared with 2010. Operating expenses rose 10.5%, primarily owing to a 17.5% increase in jet fuel costs to 442 million ringgit. First quarter operating profit of 240 million ringgit was down from 241.7 million ringgit a year ago.
The number of passengers carried soared 12% to 4.8 million, with capacity rising at the same pace, which resulted in load factor remaining steady at 80%.
Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia posted a 621.6 million baht (US$19.6 million) profit. Its Indonesian arm posted a marginal loss od 36.7 million rupees (US$3,670) during the quarter.
* AirAsia chief executive, Tony Fernandes, said last month he was considering an order for 50 A320ceo (current engine option) to fuel growth before deliveries of 200 more fuel efficient re-engined A320neos (new engine option) began in 2015. The ceo deal would be worth US$4 billion.
