AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia Philippines report fourth quarter lift in passengers

AirAsia Malaysia carried 2.2 million passengers in the three months to December 31, up 164% from 834,934 passengers in the same months in 2020, figures from parent, AirAsia Group, show. In contrast, AirAsia Indonesia passenger numbers fell 57%, to 168,092, in the same three months. AirAsia said passenger load factor for the three LCCs in the fourth quarter rose 13 percentage points, to 80%, the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic. "The improved monthly performance of passengers carried and additional capacity across the group indicate a V-shaped resumption trend in air travel," AirAsia said. The group is expecting a surge in demand following the news that the Thailand is re-introducing quarantine-free travel from February 1 and the resumption of a Vaccinated Travel Lane between Malaysia and Singapore on January 24. "AirAsia Thailand, which is reported separately, carried 1.1 million passengers in the quarter, down 59% from 2.8 million transported in the same months in 2020.
