AAPA director general: air travel "should gain momentum"
March 1st 2022
Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) director general, Subhas Menon, is hopeful the recovery in air travel will gather pace during 2022 from an easing of international border rules across the region. Read More » “Airlines still face challenging operating conditions," Menon said. “Nevertheless, in light of higher vaccination rates and the relatively reduced risk of severe illness from the transmission of the Omicron variant, an increasing number of Asian governments have adapted to living with COVID-19, including reversing or reducing international travel restrictions. As we move through 2022, recovery in international air travel should gain momentum.” AAPA figures show the region’s carriers flew 2.7 million passengers on scheduled international services in January, up 126.4% from 1.2 million passengers flown in the same month in 2021. Compared with pre-COVID-19 levels, the January numbers were down 92.1% from the 33.8 million international passengers carried by airlines in the region in January 2020. AAPA numbers are aggregated from the traffic data of 40 Asia-Pacific airlines with figures of previous years adjusted for comparison purposes.
