Australian airlines flew 2.6 million domestic passengers in January

Australia’s carriers transported 2.6 million passengers on domestic flights in January, up 54.8% from 1.7 million passengers flown in the same month a year earlier, reports the country's Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE). Read More » The January figure was little changed from the 2.5 million domestic passengers carried in December 2021. "The domestic aviation industry continued to recover in January 2022," the BITRE report said. "However, revenue passenger numbers still were 49.9% below January 2020 levels." The aviation sector in Australia was impacted by a surge in new COVID-19 infections during the peak end-of-year holiday period due to the Omicron virus running rampant in the community.
