Malaysia targets two million visitors following the re-opening of its borders

Malaysia is hoping to welcome two million visitors in the remaining nine months of 2022, minister for tourism, arts and culture, Nancy Shukri, has told local media. Read More » The country's international borders reopened to non-residents last Friday. There were 100 flights scheduled to arrive into Malaysia on that day with about 10,000 passengers on board, Shukri said. Tourism Malaysia figures show Malaysia welcomed 4.33 million tourists in 2020 and 26.1 million in 2019. AirAsia group carriers operated 12 flights from eight countries - Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – into Malaysia on April 1. "We have woken our planes from hibernation and already have started painting the skies red," AirAsia Malaysia CEO, Riad Asmat, said. "We wish to assure everyone we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and hygiene at all times."
