Japan Airlines applies to increase fuel surcharges for second time this year

Japan Airlines (JAL) has applied to the country's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to increase its fuel surcharge on international passenger tickets sold in Japan. Read More » In percentage terms, the largest increase is for services to Korea and Far East Russia with the fuel surcharge rising 128%, to 4,100 yen (US$32), from 1,800 yen previously. The surcharge also will be doubled for flights to Brunei, Guam, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Malaysia, Mongolia, Palau, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand if approved by the MLIT. The higher surcharge is planned for tickets purchased in Japan from June 1 to July 31. It is the second time this year JAL has sought approval from the government to increase its fuel surcharge. In March it requested clearance to apply a higher surcharge on tickets sold between April 1 and May 31. The International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) jet fuel price monitor has reported that on April 14, 2022 the price of jet fuel in Asia and Oceania was up 102.4% from a year earlier.
