China Airlines reports return to profit in 2022 first quarter

Taiwan’s China Airlines (CAL) has posted a significant improvement to the bottom line when it reported a net profit of TW$3.1 billion (US$103.6 million) for the three months to March 31, a four billion dollar turnaround from a net loss of TW$1 billion in the same months in 2021. Read More » Operating revenue rose 33.8%, to TW$37.2 billion, CAL said in a regulatory filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Operating costs grew at a more sedate 21.3%, to TW$31.7 billion. The return to profit was achieved despite a 12.8% fall-off in passenger numbers to 65,427 in the first three months of 2022 from 75,049 passengers in the previous 12 months. Cargo freight revenue tonne kilometres (FRTK), a measure of demand, eased 1.6% in the reported quarter.
