Malaysia Aviation Commission calls for feedback on Malaysia Airlines-Japan Airlines partnership
June 7th 2022
Malaysia's aviation regulator is seeking industry views on a Malaysia Airlines application to renew its partnership with Japan Airlines (JAL). Read More » The Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) said written feedback on the application is due by July 1. In 2019, MAVCOM approved the oneworld alliance members' metal neutral joint business partnership on passenger services between Japan and Malaysia and domestic routes within the two countries. The approval, which allows for revenue sharing, pricing coordination and joint sales, among other areas of cooperation, was granted from December 9, 2019 and will expire on December 8 this year. MAVCOM said the application from the airlines argued renewing the joint business partnership would expedite resumption of flight frequencies to pre-COVID-19 levels between Malaysia and Japan, offering more flight options to customers. The application also said the benefits and efficiencies from the partnership outweighed any potential detriments to competition, MAVCOM said. The two airlines argued there were adequate competition constraints from competitors in the Malaysian and Japanese markets.
