Australia domestic air passenger market approaching full recovery

Australia's in-country airline market was within striking distance of pre-COVID-19 levels in April, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has said. Read More » The Airline Competition in Australia report, published on June 8, said 4.5 million passengers flew on domestic flights in Australia in April, representing 89% of pre-COVID-19 domestic air traffic, the highest point in traffic demand since the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020. There were 6.1 million seats flown domestically in April; about 92% of pre-COVID-19 capacity, the quarterly report said. “After two very challenging years, it appears the domestic airline industry is approaching full recovery,” ACCC Commissioner, Anna Brakey, said. “A sustained recovery over the coming years will improve the financial health of the domestic airline industry and help secure the additional competition we are seeing from new and expanding airlines.” The report noted air fares were rising as fuel prices increased, a trend forecast to continue in the months ahead.
