China Eastern Airlines posts month-on-month domestic passenger growth despite “grim” May

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) carried 1.5 million passengers on its domestic network in May, up 75.5% from the 853,290 passengers it carried in April. Read More » Despite the month-on-month growth, the May figure was down 83.9% from the 9.3 million in-country passengers transported in the same month in 2021 after stay-at-home orders in parts of China, most importantly Shanghai, smashed demand. “In May 2022, as the pandemic was raging at a relatively high level globally, the domestic situation of the pandemic remained relatively grim and complicated,” CEA said in its monthly traffic report. “The COVID-19 pandemic still has a significant impact on the business of the company. It’s time span and severity has great uncertainty.” Domestic passenger load factor for the 31 days was 61.8% compared with 76.4% in May 2021 and 58.1% in April.
