July 13th 2022
The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) has published a safety bulletin on the landing approach procedure at Hong Kong International Airport's new third runway - 25R/07L. Read More » The new runway’s familiarisation operations commenced on July 8. Due to terrain along the approach path of 25R, the ILS approach consists of an RNAV transition segment and the ILS approach itself, IFALPA wrote. “This is due to proximity to terrain and possible glideslope interference by terrain,” the safety bulletin continued. “Two separate charts are published for the RNAV transition segment and the ILS segment,” it said. The safety bulletin said for pilots with access to Jeppesen Charts, it strongly recommended they become familiar with the “handling” session on the “RNAV Transition to ILS 25R” chart. The bulletin added that due to variations in chart provider configuration, pilots should note advice not to engage the ILS approach mode before reaching the waypoint TOPUN that may not be easily visible on the ILS approach chart.
