Virgin Australia (VA) and Qantas Group have submitted applications to Australia’s International Air Services Commission (IASC) for the last parcel of seats available to Australian airlines for flights to Indonesia. Read More » VA has applied for 172 seats of passenger capacity on an extra Melbourne-Bali flight a week. Qantas Group has asked for more seats on some up gauged Sydney-Bali flights. Both airlines argue there is a public benefit to their applications. VA said its proposal was superior in capacity compared with its rival’s request, which seeks to fly wide-bodies on the route but only in periods of peak demand. Qantas said its customers strongly preferred the A330’s larger premium cabin to the 737-800 on the Sydney-Denpasar route and that the wide-body could carry 12 tonnes of freight per flight. The IASC manages Australia’s air traffic rights.
