United Airlines opts out of Hong Kong-Singapore fifth freedom flights

United Airlines (UA) has notified the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) it will return rights to operate seven fifth freedom flights a week on the Hong Kong-Singapore route. Read More » “Given the improved COVID situation in Singapore and Hong Kong, United no longer plans to operate fifth freedom services between the two points,” UA said in a letter to the DOT from its legal firm, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. “Rather, United will focus on nonstop services between the U.S. on the one hand and each of the Singapore and Hong Kong services on the other hand.” Flight schedules show UA flies nonstop San Francisco-Singapore and intended to start nonstop San Francisco-Hong Kong on March 6 and Newark-Hong Kong on October 29.
