Prime minister agrees “in principle” to establishment of a state-owned Sarawak airline

Malaysia’s prime minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has given an encouraging response to a proposal by Sarawak’s premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, to set up an airline in the Malaysian state, local media reports, with Anwar confirming the matter will be discussed by his national cabinet. Read More » Abang Johari said establishment of a government-owned airline in Sarawak will apply downward pressure on airfares between Sarawak and peninsular Malaysia. At present an air ticket from Sarawak’s capital, Kuching, to Kuala Lumpur is the same price as the fare between Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, he said. “We do not want to compete with other airlines, but want to stabilise airfares to the state,” Abang Johari explained.
