Global air passenger demand increased 52.4% in March

Air travel revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) improved by 52.4% in March compared with the same month in 2022, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said. Read More » Compared with pre-pandemic levels, the results were 81.6% of RPKs recorded in the same month in 2019. In the Asia-Pacific, RPKs surged 158.6% year-on-year for the reported 31 days, continuing the robust momentum engendered by eased travel restrictions across the region. IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said the demand growth at Asia-Pacific carriers was achieved after China's reopening “took hold” in the market. Ticket sales for domestic and international travel gave every indication strong growth will continue into the peak Northern Hemisphere summer season, he said. “Airlines are doing their best to meet the desire and need to fly. Unfortunately, a lack of capacity means some of those travellers may be disappointed,” he added.
