Week 39

Orient Aviation's Week in the Asia-Pacific

By Dominic Lalk

Across the region it has been a good week in aviation. Airbus and Boeing secured the first batch of export licenses needed to deliver aircraft to Iran’s rejuvenated airline sector, while Bombardier and Mitsubishi made progress with their respective CS300 and MRJ models. In China, Shenzhen Airlines will receive six A330s from parent Air China, while Juneyao Airlines will help to solve Air China’s (and Star Alliance’s) growth conundrum in Shanghai by joining the airline grouping. But China’s regulator, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), is continuing to restrict airline start-ups in an effort to reduce market saturation, ease delays and boost safety. In Kathmandu, Nepal Airlines is looking for A330s, while in Jakarta, Sriwijaya Air is seeking proposals for three B777s. In Doha, Qatar Airways has said it would be the first carrier to adopt a minute-by-minute aircraft tracking standard in 2018, three years ahead of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) mandate of 2021 for the new rules.
