China Eastern Airlines and Qantas Airways walk away from alliance

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) and Qantas Airways have withdrawn an application lodged with Australia's competition regulator to extend their alliance on Australia-China routes. Read More » The decision to abandon the bid followed an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) September draft determination that proposed rejection of the tie-up. “Having taken into account the ACCC’s draft determination, the parties wish to advise they withdraw the application,” the airlines said in correspondence with the ACCC published on the regulator's website. “Following withdrawal of the application, coordination between Qantas and China Eastern will cease immediately and the unwinding process will be substantially completed in approximately four to five weeks,” a statement said. CEA and Qantas will honour all existing bookings and provide frequent flyer benefits for ticketed passengers.
