Garuda says Qantas codeshare to help grow Australia market amid aircraft shortage

Garuda Indonesia has called on Australian regulators to approve a proposed codeshare agreement with Qantas Airways, arguing the arrangement improved connectivity between Australia and Indonesia at a time it was dealing with limited aircraft availability. Read More » In September, Qantas applied to Australia's International Air Services Commission (IASC) for permission for Garuda to add its GA airline code on Qantas flights between Australia and Indonesia. The IASC has sought more information from Qantas and further feedback from interested parties since the initial application. Garuda said it currently had limited resources to expand its presence in the Australia-Indonesia market. "While maintaining the current frequencies and capacity on Garuda side, there are still growing passengers after the pandemic which made Garuda optimistic to add more frequencies into the pre pandemic level," Garuda said in its submission. "Therefore, within this proposed code sharing, Garuda can fill out the gap on the missing capacity and frequencies due to aircraft shortage to benefits the customers." Virgin Australia (VA) has objected to the proposed codeshare, arguing it will "further entrench Qantas Group’s position in the market, particularly on the Jakarta market".
