Korean Air changes cabin procedures to reduce risk from turbulence
July 3rd 2024
Korean Air (KAL) has brought forward the closing off of its cabin service as an additional precaution against unexpected turbulence. Read More » Introduced on July 1, the new order of final service on medium and long-haul routes will finish 40 minutes before landing compared with 20 minutes previously. KAL said the rule ensures inflight service stopped before its aircraft started its descent to touch down. Turbulence has become a persistent and growing problem in recent years, the airline said, noting incidents had doubled in first quarter 2024 compared with the same months in 2019. “Turbulence is becoming more frequent, especially as the aircraft descends, due to large temperature differences between altitudes,” KAL said. “This is why Korean Air cabin services will now end before the aircraft begins descent.” The airline also is conducting a “comprehensive review of service strategies to ensure the highest standards of safety and travel experience for its passengers” during episodes of turbulence.
