Australia’s domestic passengers paying more to fly

To date in September, Australia’s domestic air fares are trending higher than a year ago, the monthly index of domestic air fares compiled by the country’s Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) shows. Read More » Business class tickets recorded the biggest increase, at 11.6 index points, (22.4%), to 63.6 points. Restricted economy was up 15.7%, or 12.7 index points. The best discount economy category is recording the smallest increase at 2.5%, or 1.7 index points. “The series is a price index of the lowest available fare in each fare class weighted over selected routes,” the BITRE report said. “It does not measure real airline yields or average fares paid by passengers.” September is the first month since domestic carrier, Rex, entered voluntary administration and suspended 737-800 operations between Australia’s major cities.
