October 22nd 2024
Australian government data reports domestic air fares are trending upwards for a second consecutive month. Read More » The monthly measure of air fares conducted by the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) said business class tickets recorded the biggest increase, climbing 33.4%, or 17.2 index points to 68.7 points compared with a year ago. Restricted economy fares were higher by 16.6%, or 13.4 index points. The best discount economy category recorded the smallest increase, 4.5%, or 3 index points. The year-on-year increase is larger than a month earlier for all three categories of tickets, BITRE said. “The series is a price index of the lowest available fare in each fare class weighted over selected routes,” it said. “It does not measure real airline yields or average fares paid by passengers.” It is the second month since domestic carrier, Rex, entered voluntary administration and suspended 737-800 operations between Australia’s major cities, reducing competition on the country’s east coast trunk routes. Rex continues to fly its regional network.
