Kansai Airports to match pre-pandemic flight volumes in 2024 winter season

International flights each week are forecast to be 1,353 passenger flights - 96% of 2019 pre-pandemic numbers - and 194.5 cargo flights, the second highest result in the history of its winter air freight schedule. A steady recovery in inbound flights to China and Southeast Asia as well as increased demand from South Korean carriers has provided the impetus for airlines to expand their schedules operating at the airports, Kansai Airports said. Five new routes to China, two to the Philippines and one to South Korea are additions to its flight volumes in the coming winter season, it said. South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North America are forecast to match or increase their routes to Kansai compared with pre-pandemic 2019. At present, 366 flights a week fly South Korea-Kansai, 158% more than in 2019. Increased flight schedules to the airport also include 126 to Hong Kong and Macau (101% of 2019), 133 to Taiwan (99% of 2019); 191 to Southeast Asia (96% of 2019) 17 to Middle East (243% of 2019) and 12 to North America (100% of 2019). Flights to China have recorded a significant recovery to 76% of pre-pandemic 2019 volumes, it added. Domestic passenger flights per day at the three airports will be 287, equivalent to summer 2019.
