Australia reports 1.2% improvement in domestic passenger traffic in August

Airlines operating in Australia carried five million passengers on scheduled domestic flights in August, up 1.2% from 4.9 million in-country passengers transported in the same month a year earlier. Capacity, measured by available seats, was down 3.3% year-on-year for the month while passenger load factor was higher by 3.5 percentage points at 83.3%, Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) has reported. August was the first full month since local carrier, Rex, entered voluntary administration and ceased flying its 737-800s on major domestic city routes. The busiest route for the 31 days was Melbourne-Sydney, with 651,900 passengers, up 1.2% from the 644,400 air travellers who flew between the two cities in August 2023.
