China Airlines to divide wide-body order between Airbus and Boeing

Taiwan's China Airlines (CAL) is nearing a decision to split a multi-billion-dollar commitment for long-distance passenger jets between Airbus and Boeing, leaving an order for freighters hanging in the balance, Reuters Agency has reported. Read More » The carrier has been evaluating the 777X and the A350-1000 types as replacements for its 10 777-300ERs and to lock in capacity for growth. Potentially, CAL could sign for 20 wide-bodies between the two aerospace OEMs. Reuters sources suggested political considerations may be playing a role in the selection process. Trump's first administration strongly supported Taiwan, but on the campaign trail this year he said Washington should be paid for its protection of Taiwan and that its IT industry had stolen U.S. semiconductor business. “This has unnerved Taipei,” Reuters reports. China Airlines chair, Hsieh Shih-chien, has denied reports the airline group is facing political pressure.
