Australian travellers have brief respite from some air ticket hikes
November 19th 2024
An Australian government measure of domestic air fares shows there is some relief for passengers travelling on “best discount fares” this month. Read More » The monthly measure of air fares conducted by the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) said best discount ticket prices declined by 10.9%, or 8.3 index points, to 67.8 points to date in November compared with a year ago. But that was the end of the good news. The BITRE report said restricted economy fares were higher by 11.6%, or 9.6 index points, and the measure of business class tickets increased 10.1%, or by 5.3 index points. “The series is a price index of the lowest available fare in each fare class weighted over selected routes,” BITRE said. “It does not measure real airline yields or average fares paid by passengers.” November is the fourth month since domestic carrier, Rex, entered voluntary administration and stopped flying between Australia’s major cities, reducing competition on the country’s east coast trunk routes. Rex continues to operate its regional network.
