Air India expands Oceania network with Virgin Australia code-share

Air India (AI) has signed a unilateral code-share with Virgin Australia (VA) that covers 16 destinations in Australia and New Zealand. Read More » The agreement allows AI to place its airline code on VA flights from Melbourne and Sydney to Adelaide, Ballina/Byron Bay, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Hamilton Island, Hobart, Launceston, Newcastle, Perth and the Sunshine Coast as well as Queenstown in New Zealand. “Australia is one of Air India’s most important international markets, so it is incredibly exciting for us to be partnering with Virgin Australia to expand our presence in the region,” AI chief commercial officer, Nipun Aggarwal, said. VA chief strategy and transformation officer, Alistair Hartley said: “India is a growing tourism market for Australia. This partnership will encourage travellers arriving on one of Air India’s 14 weekly flights [into Australia] to explore more of our wonderful country thanks to seamless onward connections on the Virgin Australia network.” AI, a Star Alliance member, flies from Delhi to Melbourne and Sydney. It recently announced suspension of Melbourne-Delhi from March 30 to September 30 due to aircraft shortages.
