Air New Zealand forced to trim capacity by 3.1% in January

Read More » Domestic capacity was lower by 2.8% in the month compared with a year ago and long-haul available seat kilometres (ASK) were reduced 5.5% in the 31 days. The Star Alliance member has shrunk ASKs in eight of the last nine months. “Capacity reductions in both the month and year-to-date periods are driven by reduced aircraft availability from global additional engine maintenance requirements,” An Air NZ regulatory filing said. The flag carrier flew 1.24 million passengers in the reported period, a decline from the 1.26 million air travellers it transported in the same days in 2024. Revenue per available seat kilometre on trans-Tasman and Pacific Islands services was down 1.3% year-on-year due to lower domestic demand, the airline added.
