International airline association reports aircraft delivery backlogs at historic highs

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said overnight the aircraft shortage is worsening as persistent supply chain disruptions delay delivery of new aircraft and impose severe capacity constraints on airlines, limiting their ability to satisfy demand. Read More » Manufacturers’ backlogs now stretched to more than a decade, it said, which meant airlines have had to adjust their fleet planning and investment timelines to cope with different competitive dynamics, IATA said. The global association estimates the aviation industry has accumulated a shortfall of 5,352 aircraft from 2019 to this year. “For further perspective, had there not been the COVID period or any other demand shocks, an additional 10,000 aircraft would be needed today to meet that theoretical demand,” IATA said. “This illustrates the magnitude of the supply gap and underscores the severe impact supply chain disruptions have on the airline industry.”
