Qantas Group contacted by "potential cyber criminal" about stolen data

Qantas Airways has confirmed an unverified person or persons have contacted the airline after the flag carrier revealed the personal data of six million customers was stolen. Read More » The airline is working with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) about the next steps [to be activated], a Qantas spokesperson told local media. "A potential cyber-criminal has made contact and we are working to validate this," the Qantas spokesperson said. "As this is a criminal matter, we have engaged the Australian Federal Police and will not be commenting further about the detail of the contact. There is no evidence any personal data stolen from Qantas has been released, but with the support of specialist cyber security experts, we continue to actively monitor [the situation]." On July 4, the airline revealed one of its customer contact centres was the victim of a cyber-attack with names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and frequent flyer numbers hacked.
