Australia’s domestic passengers intending to fly business class or purchase restricted economy tickets enjoyed air fare relief this month compared with a year ago. Read More » Australia’s Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics’ (BITRE) monthly report said restricted economy fares declined 28.7% (27 index points) to 67.1 points and the business class measure was 6.7% lower at 59.6 points. On a less positive note, travellers searching for the cheapest air tickets were likely faced higher fares as the best discount fare category rose 8.2% index points (5.8 index points) to 76.2 points. "The series is a price index of the lowest available fare in each fare class weighted over selected routes," BITRE said. "It does not measure real airline yields or average fares paid by passengers."
