Walter Cho’s influence at Korean Air on the rise

Korean Air is accelerating its third generation succession as Walter Cho, executive vice-president and only son of chairman, Cho Yang-ho, assumes an increasingly larger role in steering the country's largest carrier towards recovery. Read More » The younger Cho, 41, has been in charge of the carrier's passenger and cargo management, strategic planning and marketing, but earlier this month, he was given additional authority to oversee Korean Air’s catering, hotel and other businesses.
These operations were previously controlled by his older sister, Heather Cho, 43, who was forced to resign last year, following the infamous "nut rage" scandal, her subsequent jail time and the negative headlines the episode provoked worldwide.
Acting CEO of Gulf Air quits
The acting CEO of Gulf Air, Maher Salman Al Musallam, has resigned, the carrier confirmed on Wednesday, without providing further details, including a successor. Al Musallam has been acting CEO of the Bahraini flag-carrier since December 2012 following the resignation of Samer Majali. It was never fully explained why he remained inan acting capacity for such a long time. There was no indication of Al Musallam’s resignation at last week’s Bahrain International Air Show, where he signed major Airbus and Boeing orders to re-equip the carrier’s fleet.
Oneworld CEO Ashby decides to move on
Oneworld CEO, Bruce Ashby, has tendered his resignation and will leave the alliance in June. “After five years in this role it makes sense for me to move on, ” Ashby said, when he announced his resignation on January 22. Oneworld said an external selection process had begun to identify Ashby’s successor.
Oneworld chairman and Cathay Pacific Airways chief executive, Ivan Chu, credited Ashby with leading the alliance through “a period of tremendous transformation” and growth, adding more than 15 carriers as full or affiliate members to oneworld.
