The chief executive of Jetstar Hong Kong, Edward Lau, said he is confident the proposed low-cost carrier will receive the go-ahead from the Hong Kong government to launch flights. “The entire management is based in Hong Kong. I make business decisions myself and report to the Hong Kong-based board,” said Lau.
Originally planned as a joint venture between Qantas Airways and China Eastern Airlines in Shanghai, Jetstar was forced to acquire a legally domiciled Hong Kong investor before its application for an air operator’s certificate would be considered.
In June, Shun Tak Holdings, a transport, property and gaming conglomerate controlled by the family of gaming tycoon, Stanley Ho, announced it would become an investor in Jetstar Hong Kong. The three partners each hold matching one third equity holdings in the proposed carrier.
Shun Tak also has a stake in regional carrier, Hong Kong Airlines.
