Guangzhou’s China Southern Airlines, operating one of the largest aircraft fleets in the world, has placed firm orders for 20 A350-900s and 10 B777-300ERs, Orient Aviation learnt this week from China Southern sources. Read More »

Airbus CEO, Fabrice Brégier, told Orient Aviation last month Airbus has had much interest from Chinese carriers for the A350, but the “initial challenge” was early production slot allocation. “We were successful with Hainan and China Eastern and I believe the A350 will lead the Chinese market in the end,” Brégier said. Hainan Airlines subsidiary, Hong Kong Airlines, has 15 -900s in its books and Shanghai’s China Eastern Airlines ordered 20 -900s in April.

China Southern has 10 B777-300ERs, which are flown exclusively to North America. The SkyTeam member ordered 12 B787-9s in October.

Separately, former China Southern boss, Si Xianmin, stood trial for the first time in Shenzhen last week. Si is accused of taking more than $1.1 million in bribes during his tenure at the airline. He has pleaded guilty to all charges with a verdict expected at press time.
