The U.S. manufacturer is scheduled to open the facility in 2018, and has said it will have an annual capacity of 100 B737 completions and deliveries. It is a joint venture with Mainland OEM, COMAC, the manufacturer of the C919.

The Chicago-headquartered aerospace company is playing catch-up with its European rival, Airbus, in China. Airbus has been delivering A320s from its Tianjin final assembly line (FAL) since 2009. In July, the plant will commence work on its first A320neo, planned for delivery to a Mainland customer in September.

In 2016, Airbus broke ground on an A330 wide body completion and delivery centre in Tianjin, adjacent to its A320 FAL. The first A330 delivery from Tianjin also is scheduled for September. Bullish about A330 demand from Chinese customers, Airbus plans to deliver 24 A330s a year from Tianjin by 2019.
