Trent 1000 issues shutdown 113 ANA domestic flights
July 6th 2018
Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA), a Star Alliance carrier, will cancel 113 domestic services, representing approximately 2% of its domestic capacity, from July 6 to July 12 as its engineers carry out additional checks on the airline’s 64 B787s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. “Over the last two years, we have been working very closely with Rolls-Royce and the regulatory authorities,” ANA said, and added that “due to the additional mandatory inspections that were announced by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, which involve twice as many engines to be inspected, we are cancelling a limited number of flights”.
ANA operates 36 B787-8s and 28 B787-9s. More than half of that fleet is equipped with affected Package B and Package C Trent 1000 engines.
In mid-June, Rolls-Royce admitted it had detected cracks in a “small number” of high life cycle Package B power plants. Previous statements and inspection requirements had related to the later Package C variant.
Scores of carriers have had to source extra capacity to compensate for the B787s need to undergone mandated engine checks and possible replacement ahead of previously scheduled MRO checks.
