Finnair to increase Greater China and Japan capacity

It will boost its Helsinki-Osaka flights to ten times a week and operate double-daily on the Helsinki-Tokyo route for the entire summer season. It also will add a third daily flight to Tokyo during Japan’s Golden Week holiday. The frequency upgrades will increase capacity into Tokyo in 2019 by 9% compared with this year’s peak summer season.
In the interim, the Finnish flag carrier is adding capacity on the Helsinki-Nagoya route by switching from the A330-300 to the larger A350, beginning May 5.
Finnair operates its flights to Japan in cooperation with its joint business partners Japan Airlines (JAL), British Airways and Iberia. Including the joint business flights with JAL, Finnair will offer up to 41 weekly frequencies to Japan during the summer 2019 season.
“We continue to execute on our growth strategy. The new additions further strengthen our offering in key Asian markets,” said Finnair CCO, Juha Järvinen. “Travel between Asia and Europe has been steadily growing in recent years and we expect that trend to continue in the future.”
Finnair will significantly grow its presence in the Greater China area, with a 12% increase in overall capacity during the summer season, offering 42 flights a week between Helsinki and Greater China.
The carrier will increase Helsinki-Hong Kong from ten times a week to double daily A350 rotations and will replace the A330-300 with the A350-900 on the four-weekly Helsinki-Guangzhou route in 2019, resulting in a 16% capacity increase on that route.
Earlier this month, Finnair announced that Topi Manner would replace Pekka Vauramo as the airline’s CEO from January 1.
