India’s IndiGo Airlines could launch flights to London’s Gatwick Airport as early as October, a report in The Financial Express has said. Read More »

According to the story, IndiGo has obtained slots at Gatwick and plans to operate to London’s secondary airport with its 25 on-order A321neoLRs. IndiGo has started advertising for cabin crew positions based in London, Yangon, Istanbul and Riyadh, which would corroborate the report.

Earlier this year, Gurgaon-headquartered IndiGo said it would mount long-haul flights later in 2018 or early 2019. “We have secured traffic rights to fly to Abu Dhabi, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait, Male, Jeddah and Hong Kong. We are evaluating all such opportunities to expand our network and provide many more choices to our customers,” airline interim CEO, Rahul Bhatia, has said.

The carrier has 25 A321neos and 364 A320neos on order. It operates a fleet of 130 A320ceo, 34 A320neo and ten ATR72-600s. Five of the airline’s A320neo appear to be grounded due to Pratt & Whitney GTF replacement issues.

Earlier this year, IndiGo said it intended to order up to 50 widebodies, possibly A330neo, for long-haul flights to Europe. If this week’s report saying IndiGo plans to fly A321LRs to London is accurate, then the airline might have had a strategy change. Either way, IndiGo has not placed an order for the A330neo to date.
