Garuda Indonesia is cancelling its London Heathrow route after various attempts to make the service work. For a few years this decade, all of Asia’s major flag airlines served London. But the service has been difficult for some. China Airlines said earlier year it was studying whether to cancel London amongst other routes.
Garuda’s current London service is served non-stop from Jakarta on the outbound leg while the return sector goes to Denpasar Bali, a routing introduced to try to woo the leisure market. Other iterations included the outbound sector only making a stopover in Singapore Changi due to Jakarta runway works.
The three a week 777-300ER London service will be cut entirely in August while the airline’s six weekly Amsterdam service will be reduced to three times a week, also served by the 777-300ER. Garuda CEO, Ari Askhara, disclosed the changes to a parliamentary commission.
Some intra-Asia flights also have been cancelled and a review of the domestic network is underway due to government directed changes in fares, local media reports.
