Spring Airlines is expanding its partnership platform with a new code-share with Iberia. Spring has spent a few years exploring partnerships and the necessary changes and investments needed to its customer IT platform. Spring has sought to capitalise on its network from Shanghai Pudong, which most international airlines service. Not being a member of any alliance or LCC partnership makes it a strategically neutral partner.

Iberia’s code will be carried on Spring flights from Pudong to Chongqing, Shenyang, Dalian and Changchun from December 1. Spring will put its code on Iberia’s three weekly Pudong-Madrid service.

Iberia is Spring’s second code-share partner. Spring and Korean LCC, EastarJet, announced a code-share in the summer. British Airways (BA), which like Iberia is owned by International Airlines Group (IAG), has a code-share with Shanghai-headquartered China Eastern Airlines (CEA).

Virgin Atlantic recently snubbed BA by signing a joint venture with CEA and Air France-KLM. Perhaps indicating IAG’s options with CEA are limited, Iberia also announced a code-share with Hainan Airlines to Haikou, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shenzhen and Xi’an. Only Chongqing overlaps with Iberia’s deals with Hainan and Spring.

Iberia will code-share on Hainan’s Shenzhen-Madrid flight and Hainan will code-share on Iberia’s Pudong-Madrid flight. CEA is the only Chinese airline flying Pudong-Madrid. Hainan will code-share on Iberia from Madrid to 20 European cities.
