Progress is being made on Korea’s vibrant start-up scene. In March, Seoul awarded business licenses to three proposed airlines: Aero K, Air Premia and Fly Gangwon.
The first to fly will be Fly Gangwon, which secured its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) this week. It will start its life domestically with double daily 737-800 flights between Yangyang and Jeju on November 20.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will conduct on-site monitoring of Fly Gangwon during its first month of operation. There will be additional checks after six months of operation.
Meanwhile, Air Premia has placed a provisional order for five 787-9s. Delivery dates were not included in the announcement. Air Premia previously said its first aircraft order would be three 787-9s leased from Air Lease Corp. Air Premia is seeking another two leased aircraft and expects to launch in September 2020. The third start-up, Aero K, has said it will commence services in early 2020.
