IndiGo is making one adjustment to an East Asian expansion that has gathered pace in the last year.
India’s largest airline is withdrawing Calcutta-Hong Kong flights, which started in August, but will keep Bengaluru-Hong Kong. IndiGo chief operating officer, William Boulter, indicated to CNBC that the cancellation was about underlying fundamentals and not a downturn in Hong Kong tourism due to protests.
“We are still keen to operate to Hong Kong but not from Calcutta but maybe from other cities. Bengaluru-Hong Kong is doing well. Happy with that,” he said. IndiGo hopes to add a third mainland Chinese city to its network next year. It already serves Chengdu and Guangzhou. “We have the air service agreement to operate one more service to China and we are looking to materialise it early in the new year,” he said.
Half of IndiGo’s growth this year has been international. The LCC has added one aircraft a week to its fleet. The Mumbai-based LCC announced an estimated US$33 billion commitment for 300 A320neo midweek, taking its order book to 730 airplanes.
