Malaysia’s key gateway records dramatic drop in passenger traffic

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) handled 131,000 passengers in February, down 96.4% from 3.5 million a year ago, figures from Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB), published this week, reported. Read More » International passengers declined by 97.3%, to 71,000, and domestic passengers were 94.4% lower at 60,000 for the same period. MAHB said the February performance was "impacted by the re-imposition of travel restrictions, restricted curfews and temporary flight suspensions partly due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia". There was "some hope of optimism" given the arrival of the first batch of vaccines in the country in February and the government's aim to have inoculated about 70%-80% of the population by February 2022, MAHB said.
