Qantas sticking to October for resumption of its international network says group CEO
April 14th 2021
Qantas Group CEO, Alan Joyce, said today the airline was sticking to its October timetable for a restart of international flights into and out of Australia despite a slower than expected rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in the country. Read More » "We have not walked away from October," Joyce told a CAPA online event. "We're of the view there's still a possibility with the right level of assumptions around us." Qantas has suspended international flying until October, apart from some services between Australia and New Zealand under a quarantine-free travel arrangement that will begin on April 19.
Joyce said Qantas would re-instate 22 of the 25 international destinations the airline operated pre-pandemic but with smaller aircraft such as the 787-9. "We think that's sufficient to make good money and the economics work on that basis," Joyce said. Qantas has 11 787-9s, configured with 236 seats in a three-class layout, and 12 four-class, 485-seat A380s.
