India’s biggest LCC retains 53% grip on the country’s domestic passenger market; nearest rival, SpiceJet, is at 12.8%

India's airlines flew 7.822 million passengers on domestic flights in March, figures from the country's Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed. IndiGo has the largest market share in March, at 53.5% or 4.185 million domestic passengers, followed by SpiceJet (12.8% or one million passengers) and Air India (11.7%/ 917,000 passengers). India is battling through a crippling increase in COVID-19 infections, with 295,158 new cases diagnosed on Tuesday.
In related India news, American Airlines (AA) plans to start three times a week nonstop flights between New York JFK and Delhi from October 31 with 777-200s. Currently, Air India is the only airline flying the route.
