AirAsia Malaysia reports 90% collapse in passenger demand; capacity axed by 92%

AirAsia Malaysia flew 497,472 passengers in the three months to March 31, 2021, down 90% from 6.3 million in the previous corresponding period, parent company AirAsia Group said yesterday. Read More » Capacity, or available seat kilometres (ASK), was cut by 92% and passenger load factor fell four percentage points to 73%. AirAsia Group said travel demand in Malaysia during the quarter was softened by the lockdown and interstate travel restrictions imposed in January. However, the company said there were "encouraging statistics" in Malaysia from March that showed higher passenger numbers and improving load factors. "AirAsia Malaysia is optimistic the ongoing inoculation drive in Malaysia will lead to a stronger and sustainable recovery this year," AirAsia Group said. Passenger numbers at AirAsia Thailand were down 78%, at 977,932, while AirAsia Indonesia posted a 82% fall in passengers carried at 310,699. AirAsia Philippines flew 168,527 passengers in the March quarter, lower by 91% from the same three months in 2020. "AirAsia expects to see solid domestic demand in its key ASEAN markets in the next few quarters as the majority of the population receives their vaccinations amid strong pent up demand," AirAsia Group said.
