ASEAN and European Union sign aviation agreement

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) have committed to an aviation agreement that will allow carriers from both regional blocs to potentially operate on more routes. Read More » The ASEAN-EU Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement (AE CATA) will permit the airlines of ASEAN and EU nations to fly any number of services between both regions. "The AE CATA will significantly strengthen air connectivity between ASEAN and Europe and bring both regions even closer together," ASEAN secretary-general, Lim Jock Hoi, said. "This will allow them to reap further economic benefits." ASEAN and EU airlines also will be able to operate up to 14 passenger services a week with one stop within the other region. There is no limit on cargo flights with one stop in the other region. European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, said the agreement was the first ever "bloc-to-bloc" air transport agreement and represented an important milestone in the EU’s external aviation policy. "It provides essential guarantees of fair competition for our European airlines and industry while strengthening reciprocal prospects for trade and investment in some of the world’s most dynamic markets," he said.
