India’s domestic passenger numbers slump after nationwide spike in COVID-19 cases

Airlines in India flew 63% fewer domestic passengers in May compared with the previous month as the country battled a devastating wave of new COVID-19 infections, figures from the country's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) showed. Read More » There were 2.1 million domestic passengers in May, down almost 66% from 5.7 million passengers in April. The May figures represented a 73% reduction from a February peak of 7.8 million domestic passengers carried. IndiGo captured the largest share of the market for the month,at 55.3%, or 1.2 million passengers. State-owned Air India rose from third to second position for the reported period with a 20.3% market share, or 429,000 passengers. SpiceJet slipped to number three spot with 199,000 passengers, or 9.4% of people transported by all carriers in the month. A comparison with May 2020 figures was not meaningful given domestic flight operations in India only resumed on May 25 2020.
