Australian domestic passenger numbers down 4% month-on-month in May

Australia's domestic carriers flew 3.4 million passengers on scheduled flights in May, down 4% month-on-month from 3.5 million in April, figures from the country's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) showed. Read More » For a comparison with pre-COVID-19 traffic levels, the May 2021 figure was 30.7% below the 4.9 million domestic passengers in Australia in May 2019. Comparisons with 2020 traffic figures were not meaningful given travel was heavily restricted amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The passenger load factor in May 2021 was 68.2%, compared with 70.6% in April and 77.4% in May 2019. Capacity, or available seat kilometres (ASK) was 20.7% below pre-COVID-19 levels in May.
